Real Estate Q&A - What School Will My Child Attend?

Real Estate Q & A:
What School Will My Child Attend when I Buy That House?

A military family who will be relocating to the D.C. Metropolitan area in 2014 contacted me with this question.

Crofton Middle SchoolThey've already talked to friends in this area and done a ton of research online, which helped them narrow down their home search in this huge metropolitan area to a certain few zip codes. Number One on their search criteria: Crofton or Central Middle School and South River High Schools.  (Photo: Crofton Middle School)

Based on my local knowledge, I realized they had inadvertently excluded several communities in another zip code which meets their search criteria, including school boundaries. Before setting up their automated email search, I perused the listings in this other zip code to include/exclude homes based on schools, and was shocked at how many agents had identified the wrong schools for their listings or failed to identify any schools at all.  How did I know?

I checked the website of Anne Arundel County public schools, which provides a school search feature. It takes an extra minute or two for a listing agent to verify the school as part of his or her due diligence at the time of listing. While many listing agents do this, buyers can't count on it. Some agents don't fill in any information or they provide incorrect information.

Home buyers in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, who want to know "What school will my child attend when I buy that house?" should probably bookmark the link for LOCATE MY SCHOOL so they can confirm the school for any property they consider.  While the correct information may be included with the listing, it's always best for a buyer to independently confirm something this important.

P.S. Great schools are a high priority for military families whose children relocate several times during those critical K-12 years. Crofton and Central Middle and South River High are among the most sought after schools by relocating military personnel.
