Flags fly over Crofton's "main street" year round, not just on holiday weekends like Memorial Day and July 4. This beautiful tradition was the brainchild of former Crofton Civic Association President Ed Dosek, a retired Brigadier General in the U.S. Army who knew how to get things done. Crofton community organizations, businesses and other individuals contributed to the effort and continue it now, a decade later.

Honoring our country comes easy to Crofton residents... many of them are civilian employees and military personnel, both active duty and retired. We're literally surrounded by the U.S. Naval Academy, Fort Meade and the National Security Agency, and Andrews AFB - all within 30 minutes. NASA-Goddard and the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Beltsville are also about a half hour from Crofton, and the Pentagon, White House, U.S. Capitol and other federal government agencies are within an hour of this beautiful community.
I think anyone relocating to the D.C. - Baltimore area for a new job with the Federal Government knows instantly, when they see those flags, that Crofton is a welcoming community for patriotic Americans - a place where they will feel very comfortable living.

Margaret...not that I ever questioned Maryland being a beautiful state, but this picture sure says it! I love the blvd in the street, how beautiful!
We're hoping to dodge rain today and mulch beds out at the house before a housewarming party with clients who closed on their home last month!
Happy Memorial Day!
Working in Silver Spring Md for DOC/NOAA was great. Maryland, Virginia and DC are all so beautiful. I've visited Crofton a few times, and it is lovely. Happy Memorial Weekend,
Margaret what a beautiful photo. It's cloudy and rainy here, but I will remembering what this holiday is really about while I'm NOT having my picnic. Have a great weekend.
Margaret you are blessed, what a great way to welcome folks. We do have a parade in Saline and have since I lived here. It is very heart warming. But Ann Arbor does NOTHING. Well a few neighborhoods walk around but nothing by the City. Such a shame.
Missy, it is a beautiful day in Maryland today... sunny and warm, but not hot. We're going to have a great day, and hopefully a nice weekend. I consider myself very fortunate to live in a community that displays patriotism.
Tammy, This is a nice clear sunny day just like the one when I took this photo. No picnic for me, at least not today, but I hope to get a bunch more flowers planted.
Rebecca, you'll have to contact me if you get back this way. Yes, I've been to NOAA down in or near Suitland to meet clients who worked there. I didn't mention NOAA, but that's about a half hour from Crofton also.
Thom and Ray, I do hope the rains hold off 'til your party is over! No sign of any clouds in my neighborhood today!
Nice post. Your I (heart) Maryland is cute.
What a great idea to fly the flags year 'round, especially with all the military and civilian employees living in the area. Nice photo; Maryland is such a beautiful state. I lived there for 4 years. Have a wonderful week-end.
So much attention to our military this time of year nice to ha e it all year long.
Michael, Thank you. I saw this, liked it, couldn't find the source... so I set out to re-create it the best I could.
Shirley, There's a reason Maryland is called "America in Miniature" - We've got mountains, ocean, cities, agricultural areas... just about everthing but desserts.
Terry, with so many military and government people in the area, it's a natural for this to be a place where patriotism thrives.
Thank you for your comments!
Margaret-you do live in one of the prettiest communities in MD :-) I hope you are enjoying your day with family and friends.
Thanks, Cindy - Just tried to make a hotel reservation for Philly REBar Camp hotel this week, but alas... they failed to mention the reservation deadline for that rate was May 6. So... now I'm online, looking for a place to stay tomorrow night.
