We no longer order a Reuben anywhere else because we know it will not measure up to those at Rip’s in Bowie.
In fact, Rip’s is always on the list of favorite local restaurants I give to relocating homebuyers, along with the notation “World’s Best Reuben.” But I’m not hesitant to try something different at Rip’s, and I’ve never been disappointed. My other lunch-time favorites include their Crab Melt Sandwich and their Quiche, while Larry likes Eggs Montoya.
Check out their menus for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner online – you’ll see their prices are as good as their food. And speaking of their food, everything is made from scratch with fresh ingredients, using recipes that have been favorites of Rip’s customers since it opened in 1952.
Rip’s menu and quality food are not the only things that set them apart from the many franchise restaurants in the Bowie-Crofton-Gambrills corridor. Their decor is a reminder of Bowie’s place in American history as the “Cradle of American thoroughbred racing.” In fact, booths are constructed like horse stalls and each bears the name of a famous racehorse.
Attached to Rips is their liquor store and Deli, and behind Rips is lodging. We haven’t tried them, but I surely do recommend Rip’s Country Inn!
By the way, Rip's is located about a half hour from Andrews AFB, Fort Meade, and the U.S. Naval Academy. If you're stationed there, Rip's is not too far away for a dining-out treat that may remind you of your favorite restaurant back home.
Here is their address, if you’d like to enter it into your GPS: 3809 N. Crain Highway, Bowie, MD. 20716.
Directions: From Crofton, go South on Rt. 3 past Rt. 50, and look for it on your left. From Annapolis, go West on Rt. 50 to Rt. 3 South, and Look for it on your left.

ABSOLUTELY. Rip's is an institution in that area. Wonderful food and ambiance. Up and down Route 301, the chains are everywhere but Rip's keeps packing them in.
Margaret,
And just before lunch! Shame they can't e-mail Reubens!!! Thanks, Fran
Lenn - When I saw your name on my homepage - that you had commented on this post - I KNEW you'd add your endorsement. We should set a date to meet there next time you're in this area. Any excuse for a Rip's Reuben!
Fran - Well, now you know where to eat when you come here for a visit. And look at the bright side... you can still enjoy Reubens at other restaurants because you haven't yet experienced one at Rip's.
Ooooh, sounds delicious. Love hearing about all the great places to eat everywhere. We have some great barbecue!
Hey Margaret,
Next time I am that way, I will definitely look it up!
Margaret, it's exactly 305 miles from my home - if I left right now I'd be there in about 5 hours 8 mins. Hmmm might be a tad late for a Reuben but awfully tempting!!! :)
Susie - I agree! It's great reading all about the local restaurants and sites all around the country. Before we leave on our drive to Milwaukee next week, I think I'll check out Localism posts for places along our route.
Bill - Thanks for commenting.
Lee & Pamela - Just a little far... but I'll bet you've got some great restaurants in Raleigh!
Nothing better than a locals recommendation sounds like a great place to stop for a sandwich.
I drive by there almost every day and I have never been there. We only moved to the Bowie area last summer so we still are discovering the local places to check out. I'll have to give it a try.
Margaret, For lunch today I had the ultimate Reuben...not at Rips but at the Carnegie in NYC....Yumm.
Will have to check out Rips. How about a AR gathering there?
Terry - 'Tis a nice because it's unique, not to mention the food and the menu.
Stacey - Yes, you will!
Margaret - Well, why not?! Then again, I could go for some crab cakes at Phillips at the Baltimore Inner Harbour...
Let me know when and we will have crab cakes in Baltimore. There are some better places for luscious crab cakes.
Based on your recommendation my husband and I checked out Rips on Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. Thanks.
I love Rip's too. Stuffed flounder is the BEST! I consider it an old Landmark that stands out for me.
Years ago my brother had his wedding brunch there after getting married at the Courthouse in Upper Marlboro, it was charming.
