“But I can’t run from my front door to the corner mailbox!”
That’s a quote from my daughter Susan a few years ago when someone challenged her to participate in the Cherry Blossom Run. And she wasn't kidding, when she said that. After her doctor advised that asthma was no excuse for saying “no” – in fact, it would be good for her – she went online and found a training program for beginning runners. And yes, she did finish the race. If she could do it, you can, too!
Now y
ou can train with local resident and prominent runner, trainer and author Christine Hinton, also known as The Running Coach.
Christine is offering her 10–week training program for Crofton area runners, beginning on September 19 at Crofton Country Club or Christine’s house, depending on the size of the group. If you prefer, you can train for the 8k Downs Park 5 Miler on Saturday November 7 at 8:30 a.m. (Or you can train just for the heck of it and not participate in any race at all!)

Margaret, sounds like a great program, wish I lived a little closer.
Margaret, what a great program! Running was never in my idea of fun things to do, but much of my family loved running. But what a great idea, just jumping out there and not knowing what you are doing probably does not make for a rewarding experience at all.
Are you a runner?
Hahahaha... Andrea, I have to laugh. No, this grandmother is not a runner! It would have been a good thing for me to start about 40 years ago, but I didn't know any runners and it wasn't popular in those days. Coach Christine contacted me to post something in my FocusOnCrofton blog, and I decided to get her a little extra exposure through Localism and my Activerain outside blog.
Jen - It does sound like a great program, and a great way for people with similar interests to meet each other, as well. I think my daughter would jump at a chance to join a similar group in the area where she moved. Without some training pals, she has pretty much given up on running. What a shame!
Hi Margaret,
My husband is training for the Oct. marathon in Baltimore. He and his friends are running as a team, so each is to run a 7 mile leg. I don't know how he does it! He says that you have to tell yourself that there is no stopping to take a break. UGGG!
Margaret,
Wow. I've been working with Christine and her family to buy a house here in Crofton for a while but never though to blog about her business. Great job.
Ironically, we met through one of my other blogs when she was still in Florida and wanted to know more about Crofton.

Hi Margaret...Love the lead-in to your post.
Sounds like something I would say and mean. One of my sons and my daughter-in-law take part in triathalons. They have three children, aged 6, 8 and 10, and still have the energy to run, bike, and swim. It's wonderful.
Good for Susan. Hope she keeps it up.
Kate
I gave up running after a leg fracture that took a long time to heal. I've been having visions of running again but think I'll stick to a little more kick in my walks instead.
Linda - Christine just prodded me in an email with "You're never too old to start running. Maybe I'll see you there." Hahaha... I don't see any marathons in my future.
Richard - It's a small world, after all.
Kate - One of my sons and his wife do a lot of cycling. We arrived at their home for a visit last year, and she had just come in from a 67-mile bike ride. Yikes! No real runners in my family, though. Susan hasn't found a running group in Texas and doesn't want to do it alone, so she heads to the treadmill at the gym instead.
Cindy - That sounds like a good reason to stop running!
Margaret, I know a woman who totally changed her life training for a bike ride from Atlanta to DC to raise money for AIDS research. She started out looking like me, and now she's a babe!
Margaret, never did take up running...but walking, I love.
Wonderful localism post. I love featuring local folks. I've met some fabulous neighbors and local business folks with local posts.
I don't run. Too many past injurises to feet and ankles, but I can walk with the best of them. In fact, better than many.
Nice Localism post for Christine Margaret!
I like to run, but only short distances. My sister is the true runner of the family. She qualified for the New York Marathon this November! I am very proud of her!
Sounds like a good time -- we are not runners -- but here in Arizona Bob gets involved with his Rotary club and the spring marathon as a volunteer.
Margaret - I'm in the Grandmother's club with you! I've never been a runner either although it's something that could really help me to shed a few shall I say extra pounds. I do love to walk though whenever I can.
This post is just the thing for people in Crofton to take advantage of Chrstine's expertiese as a trainer.
Hi Margaret -- I had moderate to severe asthma as a kid and played a lot of sports, even if I wheezed and about keeled over. As a young adult, I ran a half-marathon, not easy, and tried for a marathon but never made it. I love reading posts like this and this was a fun and informative one.
I learned my lesson on training. Just ran 1/2 marathon on Sunday with no training...so needless to say I am walking a bit funny today! :) But all in all it was a great experience and next time - training before big race is highly recommended!
Oh, this is great, Margaret! I hadn't thought of doing localism posts on individuals and their contributions! This solves a problem that I've had for the last wo days on how to write a blog post about a particular event that happened in my city this past weekend...thanks!
This might be the perfect encouragement to get someone started with an exercise program that could change them and improve their lives.
I'm concerned about a needed visit back to the orthopedic surgeon for my knees....Hate to hear what she might have to say. Right one has been bothering me more, and now the left one some too. Much of it has come from WAY to much sitting at a desk! Thank you real estate!
So, I'll pass on the running! But she sounds like a great coach!
I should do it too! LOL. I am using way too much of my sitting muscles - sigh. I would love to tackle a different challange. ~Rita
Margaret, so funny that I'm seeing you write about this as I just came in from running 7 miles at Belle Meade Boulevard and Percy Warner park. I didn't start until I turned 50. It's tough and I don't go very fast, but I get better and better. Your daughter will do fine!
Hi Margaret,
Sure sounds like a fun time had by all. Hope your weather was a beautiful as seacoast NH has been all week long.
It doesn't get better than this, especially in NE.
Take care,
Patricia Aulson/ Portsmouth nh homes
Margaret, great info on training starting where you are at and getting better. As an avid runner myself I have experienced many of these breakthrough moments and they surprise me each and every time they occur.
Oh my goodness... I took a break from processing a listing, and found a bunch of unexpected comments here on my lil ol localism post! I promise to come back and thank you all, but right now business is calling! 'Hope all these comments help generate a ton of Google Juice for The Running Coach.
Margaret: I'm not a runner, never have been but I definitely respect those who are. Let's see, a wasp got in my hair once and I moved pretty fast as I recall. Perhaps, I have some hidden potential I didn't know about. Hmmm, where are my running shoes, ah yes, I remember, I don't have any. :-)
