Fort Meade - USNA - Andrews AFB: My Letter to the Editor Got Results!

My Letter to the Editor Got Results!

I'm still laughing out loud...   Margaret Woda, Community Activist.   That's me!

My recent Letter to the Editor of the local newspaper wasn't my first, but it is the only one to achieve prompt tangible results.  When I read Mike in Tucson's post about trying to get our names in the print media, I knew my story would be a good follow-up to that.  But let me go back to the beginning:

Like many of you, I have several Google Alerts set up, including one for my community.  It turns out there are quite a few other Croftons - one in Kentucky, another in Nebraska, one in Canada and several in the United Kingdom - and I enjoy reading about all of them, when I get an alert.  A Google Alert received earlier this month really caught my eye.  It was a series of book reviews by the staff of Crofton Library that I thought would be great to mention on my community blog, Focus On Crofton.  There was just one problem - nowhere in the banner or on this newly discovered website did it say WHICH Crofton Library.

Crofton Library Banner

I loved the format and content, so I decided to blog about the website and just make light of the fact that I didn't know if it was a product of the Crofton MARYLAND Library.  (Click here to read my post.)  A few hours later I was excited to see two comments - the first was written by a member of the staff indicating that YES, it is OUR Crofton Library.  I was so pleased and proud of myself for pointing our community toward this wonderful resource.  That lasted about two minutes, until I read the next comment by someone else on the Library staff informing me the library was disabling access to this website, apparently as a result of my blog post about it.

Library - istockphotoYou can read my initial response in the comments to that post - but, after sleeping on it, I decided to write a Letter to the Editor of our local newspaper to challenge the decision by our PUBLIC library blocking PUBLIC access to their book reviews.  My letter appeared three weeks later in Thursday's edition of the Crofton Crier, March 27, and I received an email the next morning informing me that public access is now restored to Crofton's Read and Review.

As I said earlier, I'm still laughing out loud about this.  My upbeat and articulate letter (if I do say so myself) complimented the disabled website and mentioned my community blog, exposing it to an audience of people who probably never visited Focus On Crofton before.  The spike in visits to my blog on Thursday and Friday attest to the benefit of that exposure AND the Library's website is again available to the public.  No amount of money could have purchased such effective marketing for my blog!

I've written Letters to the Editor before - maybe once or twice a year - usually in response to an article about the local real estate market.  Periodically, people (usually agents) mention to me they've seen my letters; it certainly can't hurt my image as a knowledgeable local real estate professional, provided this strategy is used in moderation.

Sure, I'd prefer to have NBC or The Washington Post contact me for an interview but, if they don't, I can take matters into my own hands by writing a Letter to the Editor for my local newspaper.

You go girl! I read Mike in Tuscon's post the other day. I can't imagine the public library wanting to keep the public away from their site? You'd think they would be happy to know their reports are being read.

Great Job!!!! Isnt it fun to watch activity go up when you  get press like that!

Margaret, that is awesome that your use of technology opened the eyes of the public up to something they probably wouldn't have taken notice to before.

Margaret, I remember that post and I thought it was odd that they would not want to make those reviews public.  Good for you for standing up and giving this tool back to your community!

Very cool Margaret!  Next you will have a guest column in the paper!  Then a book deal!  :-)

The pen is mightier than the sword.  I just posted about a press release I sent out for our chess students that got a front page story.

Judy - Isn't that crazy?  I was stunned when they reacted that way.

Susan, it was really win-win - for the community AND for my blog traffic.  And the library, too!

Mark - Since this was apparently a secret website, your right, the public probably wasn't aware of it.  Now they know about the library site AND mine.

Lisa - Odd indeed!  Did you look at their site?  It really is neat, and I'm not even a reader.

James - Yes, and then a movie...  Seriously, now I'm inspired - I'm gonna go after the communty leaders and manager for the lousy curb appeal of our community entrance.  Watch out, Crofton!

Randy - Isn't that cool!  We just never know...

The fact that you had comments so fast about this on your blog is really nice too Margaret.  Especially in the case of the first one, you have to figure they were already a regular reader or they have some google alerts too.  Nice!

Great job Margaret - I have google alerts set up as well, and it is interesting what comes across. Hopefully you will be published in the paper.

William - Thank you!  My husband stopped at Dunkin Donuts this morning, and someone approached him to say they'd read my letter to the editor.  They were curious about the response, and they are laughing too!

Steve - That's true, I have actually graduated to the "Top 100 most subscribed blogs list" on ActiveRain, and regular readers are more likely to comment quickly than someone who stumbles across a post in one of the groups.

Sharon - Yep, the turnaround occurred within 24 hours of the letter being published.

Margaret - good for you and the public - kinda reminds me of the child caught singing in front of the family then hides in the closet - nudging them that it is a good thing makes it better for everyone - you did a great public service with this one :o)

Margaret -- way to go!  I can't believe they would pull public access to the site.   I can't even imagine why!  Glad the local newspaper printed your letter.  Hurray!
Posted by Joan Whitebook Southern New Hampshire (BHG The Masiello Group) almost 4 years ago

Thesa - Good analogy!  'Guess they're self-conscious about their writing...  But I'm betting they were doing it on public library time and public library computers...  It's only appropriate for the site to be accessible to the public (points which I did no make in my letter to the editor, because I was trying to be upbeat and positive).

Joan - It blew my mind when they did that.  I suspect the editor of the paper thought it was crazy, too, because it was the first one - very obvious!

Hi Margaret,
That is great!  Imagine a public library removing access to their site, go figure!  You do stay on top of things.
Posted by Cynthia Tilghman, Realtor® Onslow County NC Home Specialist (Kingsbridge Realty, Inc) almost 4 years ago

Cynthia, I guess the book reviews were intended to be an internal staff development strategy, and never intended for the public.  However, as I pointed out in my letter, the same strategy could serve a dual purpose - get the public thinking and talking about reading books.  I suggested it would be a good strategy for the entire public library system to implement - and I guess someone at library headquarters agreed and gave them the go-ahead.  Who knows, it could become a model for library systems in other places!  By the way, there is no link to their book reviews on the library's official website.

Margaret:  Good for you!  I'm wondering why the public library would not want their reviews to be public?!  Glad you got results that are bound to be beneficial to so many.

Donna - Thanks, it didn't make sense to me - Fortunately, they've reconsidered now.

Margaret- It's amazing how much mileage can be gained by getting to know the media's ways. I have to think they're always on the lookout for new stories. I'm going to have to see about becoming an "activist" for my area now. :-)

Chuck - A Letter to the Editor will usually get printed in my local paper - but rarely in the Washington Post or Baltimore Sun.  It certainly can't hurt.  And I know people saw the Library letter, because they ask me about it.

Kathy - Now I'm inspired to take on the town management and leaders to do something about the tired curb appeal of the community...  'Just waiting for the Civic Association election debate to get underway so I can work to make that a priority in the election promises...

Gary - Thank you, it can't hurt!

Margaret,

Thanks for the mention.  I have no doubt that your letter was upbeat and articulate!  Such fun!
