I saw Momma Mia on stage at the Hippodrome in Baltimore a couple years ago, so going to the movie wasn't on my "must-do" list. But I accepted an invitation to join my daughter and some of her co-workers at the Studio Movie Grill in Arlington, Texas, last night. It was a hoot!
Even thouh I'd seen the show, the movie was so much fun. Great music, well cast, full of surprises, and definately updated for the 21st century from the stage version.
It's a story about a mother of the bride and her two long-time friends, a bride in search of her father, and three entertaining candidates for walking her down the aisle. The show probably qualifies as a "chick-flick" but I suspect anyone in the audience would at least enjoy the captivating music from the 70's group, ABBA.
I don't know if this is something the critics will like, but the audience in the theater sure did! I highly recommend it. I'll definately be buying this on DVD when it's available, because it will always be a great mood-lifter for a stress-filled day.

We saw it on stage in Las Vegas last year. We loved it. When we heard they were making a movie of Mamma Mia it was on our must see list. We saw it yesterday and then went straight out and bought the soundtrack.
Margaret, I'm looking forward to seeing the movie. I've lost my ABBA cd's to my teenage daughter years ago and she's been talking about seeing the movie for weeks. She's going to an ABBA concert next week in Boston and couldn't be more excited.
Margaret, this does look a like chick flick, although as a musical it looks like a lot of fun. I think I'll go see Batman ; )
Looks like I need to reserve a Movie day :)
Thanks,

Saw it in Vegas several years ago. I didn't know it was made into a movie. Should be fun!
Hey Margaret,
We had a girls afternoon out today and we went to see it.... I thought it was GREAT! At first I didn't think it would be something I would be interested in, and just went along with it to be out with the girls, boy was I surprised... I really enjoyed the ABBA music because I recognized most of the music!
I do believe that I need to see this movie...it's something I know I'd like :)
Margaret, as soon as I catch a breath, this movie is at the top of my list. Sounds like another great chick flick - with Sex and the City, this is turning into a good season for them!
Thanks for the movie review Margaret and I definitely want to see this movie. I have the sound track from the theater production on my iPod. Fun to listen to and feel the fun.
Hi Margaret,
Thanks for the review. My wife can't wait to see this movie!
Great...glad to see the review....I've been wondering about it......saw Meryl Streep was in it and thought it might be interesting..:-)
Mama Mia is my favorite play of all time - have seen it twice and can't wait to go again. I hope the movie does it justice.
Margaret- Having so many boys I rarely get to see a chick flick. Even my daughters are into the action stuff like the boys. We went to see Journey to the center of the earth Friday night. Tristan loved it.
Margaret, I'll have to get a girlfriend and we'll go see it. I only have guys in my house and they don't do chick flicks. Looks like a wonderful movie.
Hi Margaret,
Some friends saw Mama Mia this weekend also and reported the same. Sounds like I need to make plans to see it.
Margaret, Thanks for sharing. I love to see movies that are ' Mood lifters" Some of my favorites have been reruns of "Its a mad, mad ,mad world" and Sound of Music.
Morning Margaret,
Thanks for the review, like you I hade reservations about going to see the movie. I saw the stage play in Toronto when it was up and enjoyed it ever so much. I love ABBA's music so couldn't go wrong. Will take in the movie next week and drag our company along as well.
Thanks again.
I will be watching out for the DVD. Sounds like a definate " feel good " movie.
Thanks, all, for your comments - 'Don't have Internet access while traveling, except through my phone, so I had to write this blog on my TREO. 'Just not going to attempt to reciprocate or comment on the comments, but will do my best to catch up when I have better Internet access again. Thanks for reading, and I hope you all take time for yourself to spend 2 hours laughing and singing along with this great music.
Hope you are enjoying your travels. I am going to have to schedule a girls night out and catch this movie. It looks like a lot of fun!
Margaret - I too have heard good things about the movie, and look forward to seeing it.
Nice movie review. I have never seen it, or even thought about it, but you make it sound interesting. Please share with the others in the Movie Club group.
Hi Margaret...I saw it live but am planning to see the film with some of my girlfriends. trying to come up with the best time and date.
Kate
Why does Hollywood keep making movies about who's my daddy? It would be nice to be able to take the whole family to see a movie that isn't a cartoon.
Margaret...I saw the play here in Atlanta a few years back, it was awesome! I'm looking forward to seeing the movie. But, since I just got a new HDTV tv (incentive from a sale...how's that!) I'm going to wait for it to come out on video!
Hope you had a great time in Texas! Keep on selling!
OH I loved it. I saw the show at the National Theatre a few weeks ago and the movie last weekend. It is very good... except poor Pierce Brosnan can't sing to save his life. A huge Casting error - but otherwise a great movie !
Margaret - I can't wait to see the movie - I Love ABBA! Here's a link you may enjoy.
Sorry Margaret,
My wife and I just returned from seeing Momma Mia. I hate to rain on your parade, but I must regretfully give this movie two thumbs down.
Reason number 1. Pierce Brosnan should not be allowed to sing. One of his attempts was making me, AND my wife, cringe. I guess we were comparing him to ABBA.
Reason number 2. No car crashes!!! :)
Well, as I said, it probably won't win any awards - but I enjoyed every minute of it, even Pierce Brosnan.
Due back in Maryland this week, and I'll try to catch up on reciprocating when I do.
